Be Alert: Text Message Scam Hits Close to Home
Many mobile phone users in Crisp and Sumter counties have received a fraudulent text message “alert” claiming to be from The Citizens Bank of Americus. The text directed them to call a specific phone number. When called, a message at the phone number said the person’s debit card had been locked and asked them to provide debit card numbers and other identifying information. Bank data systems were not compromised and the bank’s information was not the source of the phone numbers targeted. The bogus alert went to people who are bank customers as well as those who have no relationship with the bank. Unfortunately, the scam tricked a number of the bank’s customers and created significant concern among many others. The bank quickly cancelled cards it knew were affected to minimize loss, but some fraud did occur. The bank is working with law enforcement on the case. Georgia Bankers Association Security Committee Chair Ricky Robertson, Atlantic Capital Bank, says this type of scam has been seen in other parts of Georgia in recent years. Please notify us immediately if you receive a suspicious phone call or text by calling 229-263-7575.

Change in Debit Card Fraud Notifications
In our continuing efforts to keep your accounts secure, we've improved our alert system for potential fraud.
Here's how it works:
When potential fraud is detected, you will receive an automatic email notification from
The Citizens National Bank of Quitman with the option to reply with "fraud" or "no fraud."
One minute after the email, you will receive a text alert from 32874 between 7am and 9pm EST, which also has the "fraud" or "no fraud" option.
If there is no response received from you, five minutes after the text alert, you will receive automatic phone calls to confirm or deny fraud.
Remember - our messages will never ask for your PIN or account number.
*The phone number for our Fraud Center has changed to 1-800-417-4592. If you add this number to your phone contacts and label it "Fraud Center," it will display whenever you get a call from this number.

Malware Targeting Online Banking Customers
Use caution when opening ANY email attachments from unknown senders. Financial security firms are reporting cases of attackers sending spam emails containing a Word document attachment that when opened, installs a code called Dridex that scans the user's computer for any activity related to online banking and attempts to capture personal information such as user IDs, passwords, and bank account information. These emails often appear to be legitimate messages of financial importance.
